Should We Be Patriots in the Pew?

Should we have patriotic worship services? Can we celebrate our citizenship in heaven and at the same time celebrate our earthly national citizenship?

Russell Moore, Stanley Hauerwas (!?), and Mark Dever discuss the question. In case anyone cares, I agree most with Mark Dever, with perhaps a bit of Russell Moore thrown in.

Don't expect this show to answer all your questions, but it could possibly make you think about things a little differently.

The Ecumenism of the Abortion Clinic

Russell Moore writes, "We are accustomed to seeing Evangelicals and Roman Catholics praying together outside abortion clinics and working together for pro-life legislation. But we don't think about a less pleasant ecumenism: Catholics and Evangelicals waiting together in the lobby of an abortion facility."

‘I Am a C-H-R-I-S-T-I-A-N’: Reaching Our Children with the Gospel of Jesus Christ - Russell Moore on the Albert Mohler Program

This is a great discussion between Russell Moore and Tedd Tripp on what is essential and what is harmful when it comes to sharing the gospel with children through programs like Vacation Bible School. Unlike some episodes of the Albert Mohler program, the people who call in to share their thoughts actually have worthwhile comments and suggestions to make.

I recommend regularly listening to the Albert Mohler program. Dr. Mohler is president of Southern Baptist Seminary and has great insight into both our culture and the theological framework through which we should seek to understand and interact with it.

The discussion begins at about 9 minutes and 25 seconds into the program, if you want to skip right to it.

"Different By Design" by Russell Moore

This is an excellent survey of some of the issues related to biblical manhood and womanhood. Moore points out the urgency and crucial nature of getting these issues right. I listened to it once myself and then again with Angela.

Cultivating Friendship And Accountability In The Church

Today I was listening to the April 27 Albert Mohler talkshow on the topic of Cultivating Friendship And Accountability In The Church, with guest host Russell Moore. Moore said something that I think is crucial.

Some of the discussion was about so-called "accountability" groups in the church, which so often devolve into sessions where we all keep forgiving each other for doing the same things over again without any actual progress in the putting to death of these sins. Moore pointed out that these groups usually see accountability as a form of defense. He said, I believe, that we should rather think of accountability as playing offense together.

Of course, that means rebuking and being rebuked, but the trajectory is toward holiness, not simply avoiding some form of sin. When we realize that we have God-given goals (or purposes) in life, we can see that accountability is actually edification. We are not just to keep one another from falling, but to build one another up as we follow Christ.

Let's be men of God. Go, offense!
