Birth Control: Abortifacient and Contraceptive

An academic quality letter signed by 26 prolife doctors agreeing with the position that chemical/hormonal birth control methods do indeed cause abortions, possibly more than one million per year in the U.S. alone.

Spreading the News

After I discovered this information, I shared it with some of my friends who were engaged and some who were not.  Their responses were disheartening.  Keep in mind that all of these friends were evangelical Christians.

One guy said that he didn't think life began until implantation, and he asked me not to tell his fiancee about what I had learned, because he didn't want her to decide against hormonal birth control.   What a way to start a marriage!

Another couple were interested in learning more, but then decided that they really didn't care whether or not the pill caused abortions.  The woman had already started taking the pill, and she wasn't going to stop.

One woman argued that since some babies ("fertilized ovums") die naturally or are aborted by the body even without birth control, birth control was actually an improvement.  She said with birth control, the actual number of infant deaths is less than without birth control.  This is a tough argument, but it doesn't hold up to close inspection.  See the analogies article.

Another man asked several Christian doctors.  Some said hormonal brith control did cause abortions, and some said it didn't or that it did so very rarely.  He decided to side with the doctors who said the chances of abortion were slim.  A lot of people choose to believe a doctor who says what they want to hear rather than believe the manufacturers, who clearly say that their products hinder and prevent implantation.   This man also decided not to give his wife enough information for her to make an informed decision.

Older adults have generally been mildly interested in this information, but since they are past child-bearing age, they don't usually care too much.  Some people who should care, like pastors, are also depressingly uninterested.  One pastor seemed to be able to see the issue only from a political standpoint.  Making a big deal about the pill will hurt our chances of banning "real" abortions, was his thinking.  That's probably true.  But there is a difference between political strategy and simply spreading the truth.  Here we have a drug that kills babies.  We need to let the people who are opposed to killing babies know how these drugs work.

People have a lot of faith in the government, in advertising, in their doctors, and in the glossy ads the birth control manufacturers distribute.  When we tell them that some of these people are lying and covering things up, we feel like conspiracy theorists.  This time there really is a conspiracy, though!  Please don't take my word for it.  Do your own research.  Especially read the physician prescribing information sheets.  Use the Want Specifics? box in the upper left of this page to learn more.

I would be grateful for any opportunity to present this information to any size of group at a church or elsewhere.  Just give me some advance notice!  Email: e-mail address.
